December 11- 15, 18-20

During the week of December 11-15 we will:
- learn about measuring in inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and meters.
- have guided reading groups.
- read informational articles from Time For Kids, complete assignments related to article, and identify text features.
- review contractions, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and putting words in ABC order.
- have our class Holiday Centers on Friday, December 15 from 12-2.  Please email Sarah Warner if you have any questions.  We have a sign up to help with supplies and planning for parents to help with centers.

During the week of 18- 20 we will:
- watch a holiday movie and have snacks with our second grade friends during the Second Grade Holiday Party on Monday, December 18.  This is a STUDENT only event.

- review place value and other math concepts taught this grading period.

Thanksgiving Feast Luncheon


Dear Parents, Grandparents, & Family,

It’s that time of year again! Pickett’s Mill will be hosting it’s 4th Annual Thanksgiving
Feast Luncheon. All parents, grandparents, & family are invited to join the celebration.
The Feast will take place during your child’s 30 minute lunch period on their assigned
day.
* Thanksgiving Lunch for Kindergarten, 2nd, & 3rd Grades will be Tuesday,
November 14, 2017. Our lunch time is 11:25- 11:55.
* Thanksgiving Lunch for 1st, 4th, & 5th Grades will be Wednesday,
November 15, 2017.

We are very excited to continue this holiday tradition with our Pirate Friends & Family.
In order to expedite the process & keep things running smoothly, we are asking:

(1) Understand you will not be able to request siblings from other classes have
lunch with you. Each student has their allotted time frame. Of course, you
are welcome to have lunch with all of your children at their allotted times.

(2) Arrive 15 minutes early, as parking is always at a premium & we will be on
a very strict time schedule. You may park in the front lot or the back bus
parking lot as needed.

(3) In an effort to expedite time spent in the serving line & to make the most of
your visit, we are asking everyone Pre-Pay on their child’s lunch account
prior to & for all attending the Feast. This can be done by sending in cash,
check, or posting on www.mypaymentsplus.com.

Please note, even if your child is at Free or Reduced meal status, this
does NOT apply to Guest Meals--they will be full price--$3.75.

Today I shared with the class about my upcoming trip to Haiti that I will be taking during Fall Break.  I shared a Power Point with kids showing a few pictures, as well as a map of Haiti.
Our students drew pictures for the Haitian students at the the school where I will be working.
I also shared information with the kids about a 5K and kid's fun run this October at Cedarcrest Church.  The race and fun run benefits the Haitian Education Fund.  I would LOVE for the class to join me in this event. I will be running in the 5K, and I hope to cheer for our students running in the Fun Run. Please visit the link above for more information.

Some children will begin to have a math problem a night to solve.  This will be based on how the child did completing the problem of the day, which is a review of the addition and subtraction strategies taught this school year. If the child solved the problem correctly, no homework.  If the child did not solve the problem correctly, the child will have homework.
I am asking the parents to sign the homework page. 
The homework is due the next school day.

*Some students need extra practice with adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers using the place value strategies taught in class. Therefore those students will have a homework/ extra work packet coming home this week. Please help your child complete the packet and return it once it is completed. 
Some students will have more work than others. 
We will review the strategies in class, and it will be assessed again throughout the third and forth grading periods. 
If your child does not bring home a homework/ extra work packet, then your child understands how to use the strategies to solve problems and doesn't need the extra help.

Practice Drills for Safey



You may hear your child talking about drills we have been practicing at school recently. To reinforce safety, and instill automatic responses during an emergency we have reviewed fire drills, tornado drills and code red lock down drills.
